Cathy Hill

As a school offering both the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC), the St. Andrew’s Cathedral School in Sydney, Australia, works to establish a high standard of academic integrity in conjunction with rigorous IB and HSC requirements. Cathy Hill, the Assistant Leader of Learning (Information and Research), is on the library staff and works with the teachers as much as the students, to ensure everybody is working with integrity.

“My personal belief... is that [academic integrity] really starts in Kindergarten. I’ve had people raise their eyebrows at me, but you can start by saying, ‘If you’re collecting information from somewhere, where did you get it? Did it come from a book? What’s the title of the book?’ and you just build it on. If you do that, then it becomes part of the nature of the work that the students do, as opposed to getting to Year 11 and 12 and all of a sudden, they’ve got to do this funny little thing that everybody requests [which is] references.”

Cathy supports and trains teachers on using Turnitin tools effectively, which in turn helps the educators build the referencing and writing skills that students need to successfully write their submissions for HSC and IB Diploma courses. Cathy helps teachers across Middle School (Years 7-9) and Senior College (Years 10-12) use Turnitin as a learning tool to encourage students to craft original writing with greater confidence; students are continually made aware that St. Andrew’s Cathedral School expects them to work with academic integrity.
