Turnitin announces new MOU and partnership with Japan Academic Association for Copyright Clearance (JAC)

Turnitin will work to protect the intellectual property of JAC’s rightsholders and raise awareness of issues such as publication ethics and research integrity.

Oakland, Calif.

Turnitin has today announced that it has entered into a new partnership with Japan Academic Association for Copyright Clearance (JAC). As a member of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO), JAC is the preeminent organisation in Japan representing the reproduction rights of over 900 academic research societies.

By signing this Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Turnitin and JAC agree to work towards a formal partnership, to provide the best available safeguards for the national research output of Japan. The partnership encompasses both the technology and education on issues such as international publication ethics, research integrity and plagiarism. The signing of the MOU supports the strengthening of editorial standards by raising awareness among rightsholder societies for the need to carry out appropriate checks to ensure the originality of content prior to publication.

“This partnership will tackle some of the key challenges facing academic publishing in the 21st Century,” said James Thorley, Sales Director for Asia-Pacific at Turnitin. “Both Turnitin and JAC have a wealth of experience in protecting intellectual property and addressing these difficult issues, and we hope this MOU will lead to a long and fruitful partnership which will be mutually beneficial for all stakeholders.”

Yutaka Noma, Chairman and CEO at JAC said, “The researchers of member and rightsholder societies of JAC publish the most advanced research outcomes and intellectual properties every day. These societies promote the protection of and facilitate the use of published research outcomes, and enhance ethics and integrity of research.”

Dr. Noma added, “By signing this MOU, we hope that the new partnership with Turnitin will be beneficial for JAC’s member and rightsholder societies and their research outcomes.”
