Turnitin Acquires Examsoft, Offering Institutions Flexible Options for Delivering Online and In-Person Assessments

Newcastle, UK

Turnitin, a leading provider of learning technology, has acquired the software-based assessment platform ExamSoft, expanding the international edtech company’s assessment offering. The acquisition is the latest move by Turnitin in its strategy to broaden its assessment capabilities, following its acquisition of Gradescope in 2018.

Gradescope enhances assessment workflows across a range of assignment types and subject areas by allowing teachers and lecturers to seamlessly administer and mark assessments online. ExamSoft supports this shift to online teaching and learning even further by supporting digital assessment across the entire academic year, including exam invigilation.

The acquisition of ExamSoft comes as Turnitin lays out its strategy for providing an academic integrity toolkit to support integrity in assessment across the entire assessment lifecycle, outlined during the Turnitin User Summit, held virtually earlier this month and attended by education leaders, administrators and lecturers from across the UK and Ireland.

Cees Poortman, Regional VP, Europe, Middle East and Africa, commented: “ExamSoft perfectly complements our existing tools such as Gradescope, by enabling universities, colleges and schools to uphold and protect academic integrity across the academic year - from the very first assignment that a student is set, through to their final exam, assessment can be done fully online.”

With Gradescope already helping institutions to digitise assignments and streamline online marking across subjects, the addition of ExamSoft to the Turnitin suite of tools provides the perfect combination to further help institutions to assess and protect academic integrity. Turnitin has offered institutions free access to Gradescope since March, to support institutions throughout the pandemic, and will continue to offer Gradescope free of charge until the end of 2020

“Our decision to acquire ExamSoft has been driven by the increased digitisation of exams and assessment,” added Cees Poortman. “This enables us to offer more to education institutions than ever before, with more detailed insights into each student’s learning journey to help improve overall individual learning outcomes.”

“As schools, colleges, universities and professional organisations increasingly move to online learning as the norm, it’ s more important than ever that institutions are provided with the right combination of tools and services to best suit their assessment needs.”

The ExamSoft platform also offers assessment solutions for all educational and professional levels, including certification and continuing professional development.
